This funding will support Resources for Autism (RfA) to deliver specialist support for people living with autism and their families in Birmingham. RfA is registered charity based in London that was established in 1997. Although based in London they have an established presence in Birmingham and Solihull and have been delivering support in these areas for many years. For over 25 years they have been supporting and advocating on behalf of people with autism from birth to adulthood and for those who love and care for them. Locally the West Midlands Head of Services is actively involved in a range of co-production forums such as the Birmingham Autism and ADHD Partnership Board Worcestershire’s Autism Board and the NHS England Midlands Autism Workstream. They are on a journey of ongoing learning with co-producing services with the autistic community and are committed to continue to evolve in this area internally locally and nationally. Each year they support over 2000 beneficiaries and 5000 family members providing practical support for those facing physical social or emotional challenges as well as social exclusion.

1. Build skills and confidence Group members will be encouraged to plan the sessions. Based on our experience of the pilot and other adult groups, areas for discussion presentation or role play (age differentiated) could include: Autism and me my strengths Safety online friendship and dating Sex and relationships Managing anxiety and sleep disturbance Conversation starters Understanding facial expressions Professional/personal boundaries Money management CV writing Interview skills All of these areas will help group members to develop an understanding of their autism and practise socialising in a safe, supportive environment. Trips out to local places of interest, or for social gatherings, using public transport where possible will also help to further build confidence, life skills and flexibility around new experiences for previously isolated women and girls. 2. Improve health and well being Our project will reduce isolation and loneliness for women with autism. Anxiety and depression are common co-conditions of autism, as a result of sensory sensitivity and the strain of fitting in in an increasingly complex world. Being part of a social and skills group, meeting others who share experiences and having the chance to develop social and life skills and greater understanding of themselves will lead to improved mental health and well-being. 3. Build social networks for women and girls Women and girls with autism who have been previously isolated will build a network of others with similar experiences. The pilot group had a Whatsapp group to stay in touch and offer support, and we may encourage similar outcomes from these groups where appropriate, and following discussions about internet safety. More broadly, the development of social and life skills may help women to take up opportunities like volunteering or employment and so build a social network.
