The funding will support an advice and advocacy project the South Asian Family Support Hub (SAFSH) which is now rebranded as the Community Safety Net (CSN). The continuation funding sought is for maintaining the project in years 2-3 of its original grant request and to increase its capacity to deal with the 20% rise in demand brought about by the Covid 19 pandemic. The project works closely with Birmingham Adult & Children’s Social Services local Health Centres local schools and community organisations from which it accepts referrals. There are also referrals from friends/relatives and self-referrals.

This project aims to reduce levels of unmanageable debt by advising people on a range of options so they can better manage their situation. There will be a focus on improving people’s knowledge of their rights when dealing with bailiffs and evictions. They will also learn how to increase household incomes through welfare benefits, as well as budgeting skills and money management.

A rotational service of advisors will deliver outreach at local community centres on a fortnightly basis, targeting hard to reach communities to ensure accessibility of appropriate, specialist advice provision in a range of community languages. Nishkam Civic Association (NCA) will offer free advice sessions.
