The project will focus on those who experience a visual or hearing impairment, and those who are housebound due to mobility issues. As well as reducing loneliness, other benefits will include developing coping strategies, dealing with depression, boosting self-esteem, building confidence and acquiring new skills.

Deaf people are often failed by society by lack of equal access. This project aims to ensure that the voices of deaf people living in Devon are heard on a level playing field with other groups so that organisations from all sectors can better meet Deaf people’s needs. A stronger local voice will lead to better mutual understanding and access to more inclusive services. The grant will pay for a part time Deaf Campaigns Officer together with associated project and management costs. Deaf people will benefit from better skills for campaigning, leadership and project management, more volunteering opportunities, and the ability to influence service providers.

This project will provide an expanded and further reaching mini bus outreach service for hearing and visually impaired people in rurally isolated parts of North and Mid Devon. The current service aims to counteract the the effects of sensory loss by bringing people back into contact with the outside world and training them to use equipment to overcome the limitations. People will be able to book appointments for the Sea Hear on Wheels bus or drop in to access the service operating on a regular schedule.
