Set up in 1999, Home Start South Wiltshire (HSSW) provides support to families with young children under five, who are struggling to cope for a range of reasons, including social disadvantage, poverty, mental health issues or disability. Funding is to maintain their current 1:1 support service and develop a follow up support network in order to help people move on from this. Original application: This application was to contribute to the costs of the Reaching Out service (one to one support) and the Building Together project (follow-up support network) for three years COVID19 update: HSSW are having to be creative in the way they are now delivering their services in response to the situation. They are continuing to support families through remote working, using phone calls, video links such as Zoom, and social media. They are also providing emergency support to families, such as food and babies essentials, through linking up with other local organisations such as the Trussell Trust and community support schemes and sometimes delivering goods themselves. They are beginning to receive referrals directly linked to the CV situation, and support needed will build, both in size and severity, where families are dealing with a loss of family member or financial means or other stressors. They are looking at working more efficiently, without comprising the support needed, against a background of reduced income streams, due to the CV situation. They would like this application to be revised to solely cover their one to one support service in Year 1 (£5000), and to start support for the Building Together project in Year 2, when they expect to get it going.

The isolation felt by many women with young children can be profound. It can lead to depression, anxiety and an inability to engage with others. The building of social networks is the basis of how society organises itself, it underpins communities and encourages neighbourliness. It can require a degree of confidence and self belief to take the first steps out of the door. The impact of the supportive, encouraging efforts of a trusted person such as a volunteer will enable the women to better cope with their needs and help them to widen their network of relationships. Their emotional well being will improve and this in turn will benefit children and the family unit. The confidence that is gained from making friends and meeting other mums will have a positive impact on self esteem and on reducing isolation. Women will be encouraged to widen their social network and access the support and services available locally. We know that the HSSW model achieves significant outcomes in improving isolation and mental health. Women tell us that having someone non judgemental who gives up their time on a regular basis improves their well being and sense of worth and encourages them to engage with other women and the community. We work with other charities and statutory authorities to help strengthen and empower disadvantaged communities by supporting women and families to help reduce feelings of isolation and marginalisation and increase the 'social capital' of the community.
