The Cultural Kitchen [CK], established in 2003, is a fortnightly event which offers a focal point for newly arrived refugees and asylum seekers [ASR] and more established ASR communities to meet, take part in community activities, share a meal and engage with wider communities. The CK helps to reduce isolation and supports vulnerable people by providing a safe space. The project offers 22 CK sessions a year, where ASR and other volunteers come together to prepare a healthy communal meal, using culturally appropriate ingredients. Alongside this, arts and crafts, drama and table tennis, are on offer until the food is ready, which promotes community interactions and cohesion between different groups. About 70 people attend each session. This funding would ensure CK continuation, enable us to develop the skills of our service user group so they can take a leading role in the CK and offer 4 open-house sessions promoted to wider Plymouth communities, again to develop better links, breakdown barriers and increase awareness of refugee strengths, skills and their human rights. The main outcomes of the project are: greater opportunities for volunteering, greater interaction between diverse communities, enabling skills sharing and community learning, and to have fun. We aim to build on the knowledge, experience and skills developed at the CK over the past 13 years since Plymouth became a dispersal city and develop stronger links within the refugee and wider communities.
