In Southwark black boys face multiple barriers to achieving their potential. 75% of school exclusions concern Black and Minority Ethnic (BAME) young people. Without support, many of these young people at risk are in danger of becoming permanently disengaged, ending up unemployed or prone to involvement in gangs and crime. A grant will contribute to salary costs at Southside Young Leaders Academy, an early intervention programme in London for boys aged 8-16 years, of African and Afro-Caribbean heritage, specifically targeting those who are disadvantaged and vulnerable to social and academic exclusion. Working in partnership with schools and parents it provides education, mentoring, employment skills and leadership training enabling them to achieve their full potential.
