Our volunteers slowly build a trusted relationship with their mentee. Gradually, they help to improve the life and life prospects of their young person, no two mentor-mentee relationships are the same. In the safe space provided by their mentor, a young person is able to explore new ideas and new options for themselves. This may begin with what may seem, on the face of it, to be very small triumphs such as using public transport or eating in public for the first time. It may involve the development of practical skills such as volunteering together to support a charitable cause or joining a sports club. The mentor may act as the young person's supporter and advocate in difficult situations at home, in school, employment or with the authorities eg the police. Throughout, the mentor offers the praise and encouragement so often lacking in lives that have only seen criticism and sanction. During all of these interactions, as well as providing practical help and support, the mentor is teaching by example. We know that the model works because the most important critics tell us that it does - the children themselves. In a recent academic assessment of the programme, Prof Rudi Dallos (Plymouth University) interviewed a sample of mentees and concluded ...the benefits of mentoring were impressive and clearly indicated a need for the PROMISE scheme.
