The project will provide a range of sporting activities as part of a weekly after-school club aimed at children transitioning from primary to secondary school. The 90-minute informal sessions will take place on a Monday night at Tarner Park and a range of community venues, including the secondary schools where participants will shortly be attending. Activities will include volleyball, tag rugby, swimming, table tennis, netball, rounders and dodgeball. Participants will also get to meet and interact with older children attending an existing youth group. Funding will support equipment, sessional staff costs, facility hire, coachesÂ’ fees, transport and promotion.

This project will establish a free monthly cooking club with a multicultural emphasis aimed at children and young people and their families. It will offer multicultural cooking clubs are an opportunity for children and young people to develop their culinary talents civic engagement and cultural awareness. The cooking/eating social event will be an inter-generational gathering with local organisations invited to sign-post opportunities and disseminate their support services. It will support isolated neighbours and look to embrace cultural diversity with foods from around the world.

The funding will be used to host two community festival events to bring together the community and celebrate the end of lockdown restrictions. It will be youth led with young local acts (from partner organisation AudioActive) performing. Sports activities will be devised by the cohort such as mobile skate ramps roller discoss table tennis and football training amongst other options. The walls of the park will be given fresh murals with local artists running workshops in the build up to the event and will be painted by young people.

Based on the Five Ways to well-being / the wheel of wellbeing www.nhs.uk/Conditions/stress-anxiety-depression/Pages/improve-mental-wellbeing.aspx1 the programme will focus on the follwoing key objectives over the year: 1. Connect emphasis the principles of getting together and connecting, of sharing, of talking, of being honest, asking for help all strategies for self-care. Girls will get creative on how to connect with themselves and each other through journaling as an example. 2. Be active they will participate in a range of activities such as yoga, dance, hula hooping. This may be co-facilitated by a coach with the Active for Life team, eg a Zumba or clubber size 3. Take notice - using Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), they will learn simple breathing techniques, 5 & 10 minute mindful activities eg mindful eating, mindful meditation, mindful yoga/stretching activities. 4. Keep Learning activities to move outside their comfort zone and try something new, such as trying out a musical instrument or writing, or focused around food and tasting things which are new 5. Give practice doing something nice for others and affirm one another. Learn how to give and receive compliments, also how to look out for others and our mental health & well-being in order to promote and build self-esteem and resilience. Also, offer mental health first aid where they learn to signpost friends if they need help, understand what to do if someone is suicidal or self-harming and give to others less fortunate than themselves 6. Planet exploring their relationship with the world around them, how to connect with nature and contribute to a better planet both environmentally but also in terms of happier communities recognising the small things they can do and the impact this can have.
