Staffordshire Women's Aid works to support some of the most vulnerable and isolated women and children in Stafford, Cannock and South Staffordshire. SWA works to empower women themselves to shape change towards safer, more independent lives, free from violence and abuse. The funding will be used for two further specialist counsellors for 5 years' one for adults, and one for children and young people, who will be recruited to work flexible hours that will include evenings, and who will also co-ordinate and supervise the flow of support provided by volunteer trainee counsellors on placements. They also offer multi agency training on domestic and sexual violence and related issues, to improve responses to victims and bring their experiences and risks to the forefront for practitioners.

There is a lack of information and understanding around violence and abuse experienced by older women. As a result, many older women are not identified as needing support or do not seek help themselves. Building on the success of their existing project, Staffordshire Women’s Aid will give older women a voice and build community awareness of violence against older women (VAOW) by expanding community groups, recruiting more ambassadors, and running social media campaigns and events. We want to create a safe arena where women can come together to support each other through sharing their experiences of emotional distress and mental health problems openly and honestly, without fear of judgement, fear or shame. We will work with women to co-develop a peer support group, ensuring that all 6 core values identified through the side by side research are fully embedded, allowing women to feel comfortable and able to engage positively. We want to provide a space where womens voices can be heard and their experiences validated. The group will have a social focus as its primary aim, although educational sessions will be included to enable women to discover the tools to better support themselves and each other, encouraging long term resilience and independence. Although we will provide support to help establish the group and provide initial facilitation, the groups ethos will be delivered for and by women, all of who will have lived experiences of trauma, violence and abuse. Our aim is that by the end of year 1 the group will be peer led and facilitated, with support provided by the organisation as required. As a result the main differences we would expect to see in women who have attended the group are:Improved emotional safety;Improved emotional health and well-being;Increased confidence and self-worth;Reduced social isolation.
