This 2 year grant will enable the Salmon Centre team to provide intensive support to young people facing the highest levels of disadvantage, risk and need. Sports, arts and other activities will help to boost health and wellbeing and academic achievement. Alongside this, Salmon will provide mentoring, training and employment opportunities, and mediation between families and young people when relationships break down.

This group will develop their project to provide Young Leaders roles and Apprenticeships for young people aged 14-25 to support other young people in the community facing challenges with complex needs. Young people will receive support to overcome multiple challenges, increase their aspirations, and learn the skills they need to succeed in education, training and employment to develop confidence, communication skills, anger management, team working, leadership and other life skills.

Many young people growing up in Bermondsey face ongoing challenges and obstacles that negatively impact their health, wellbeing and development. These stem from factors including poverty and worklessness amongst parents, lack of family stability and positive male role models, exposure to violence, abuse, alcohol and substance misuse – and stressful life circumstances.  In an environment of reducing local services for young people, the project will continue delivery of effective and innovative youth work to 1,000 vulnerable young people who access the Salmon Centre over a 2 year period. It will also develop a range of new interventions that respond to the changing needs of young people.

This project will work with disadvantaged young people aged 14-25 and help them to develop their work and life skills. Funding will also allow the project to recruit a new full-time volunteer co-ordinator and provide service users with additional support in mental health, drugs, housing and literacy. The volunteer co-ordinator will liaise with other youth service providers so young people in the borough can access the programme and take their skills back to their local youth clubs and centres.
