Through establishing friendships between disadvantaged children and volunteer Older Friends, the most important changes we expect to make and the outcomes we are seeking are to: 1. Improve Self Esteem & Confidence Volunteer Older Friends give one to one attention, often lacking, build up trust, and encourage, helping the child to look at new things to experience. Our Older Friends are patient and provide direct interest in their Younger Friend helping to enable them to feel important and valued, and more positive. 2. Improve Behaviour / Social & Communication skills - start to improve these skills as they get to know an adult who is not part of their family/school, allowing the child to learn to respond to an adult as an equal, and also to influence the types of activities undertaken and places they visit with their Older Friend. 3. Improve and extend their life experience, whilst having fun - giving the children opportunities to experience new activities in a safe trusting environment, with the child's interests also being taken into account, also enabling the child to talk at school about things they've done, which they would not have had the opportunity to do before. The case study below in which the name has been changed, illustrates the impact the Project can have on a girl's wellbeing. Jane was aged 14 when referred to us. She didn't have many friends, was bullied previously and had eating problems as well as self-harming, so was being home educated. Her confidence and self-esteem were very low. Her Older Friend helped with her confidence and esteem, supported her with her studies and patiently introduced her to new things including drama, which she really enjoyed. Now Jane has returned to school to study in the sixth form.
