Age UK Wiltshire (AUKW) will deliver a project with two distinct workstreams:Workstream 1:Workforce Development training and up-skilling colleagues and volunteers across public facing services in both Age UK charities, to empower them to discuss what is seen as a taboo subject by many. This type and nature of training is completely new to both Age UK Wiltshire and Age UK B&NESWorkstream 2:Targeted Media Campaign designing content and supplementary resources that are used to deliver a targeted media campaign to the over 50s, raising awareness of the risks of contracting HIV in later life and importance of seeking appropriate medical advice, early diagnosis, and support. This is a completely new topic for an Age UK Wiltshire led campaign, but crucially capitalises on the strength and reach of the Age UK brand. Not only has the number of diagnosis in the over 50s increased by 2.1% per year, many symptoms are mistaken for old age, resulting in a delay to diagnosis and treatment. The NHS calls for more to be done to raise awareness of the disease among the elderly and the importance of early diagnosis. Dr Lara Tavaschi, commenting on the Lancet HIV Journal, stated the HIV epidemic is evolving, this is potentially a result of older peoples low awareness of HIV and how it is transmitted, leading to misconceptions and low perception of their risk. AUKW wish to target over 50s. Through a considered media campaign and training staff and volunteers to have difficult conversations and removing the Taboo that surrounds sexual health.Swindon, Wiltshire and Bath and North East Somerset councils are all receptive to the positive impact such a campaign and joined up approach could deliver. AUKW has also recently launched an updated website with ability to create a designated area for the topic, and their teams have identified the best approach for training and disseminating information throughout the organisation and how they can best share their improved knowledge with partners.
