Tyneside Women's Health provides free mental health support to women of all ages in a women-only environment. By running support groups, mental health courses and a counselling service, their work helps women recover from domestic abuse, bereavement, PTSD and other serious challenges. Tyneside Women's Health is using funding from The Fore to develop new remote services to support women during (and after) the Covid pandemic.

Linked Women will bring together service users, staff and Trustees of Tyneside Women's Health to develop and oversee a programme of peer support so that women can receive mental health support for longer. The programme will comprise 5 key elements as follows:Linked Women Leaders - quarterly planning and steering group meetings whereby all peer support activity can be reviewed by service users, staff and Trustees.Linked Women Social Events - planned and led by women to provide light touch support such as coffee mornings or trips. Four of these will be provided.Linked Women Make, Do and Share - creative groups will be held on a weekly basis where women can share their creative skills and benefit from light touch mental health support through creative projects. Women will lead this group and plan creative activities together.Linked Women Safer Women Peer Support Network - will be developed specifically for service users who have accessed our structured domestic abuse programmes but who still require ongoing support. This will be a monthly network led by peer mentors.Linked Women Mental Health Peer Support Network - will be established and developed for women who have accessed structured mental health interventions. This will initially be a monthly network led by peer mentors.The purpose of the programme is to coordinate all peer support activity and opportunities under one umbrella and to formalize our approach to peer support so that women can be properly supported to set up, develop and sustain peer support approaches.

Build skills and confidence Of the 40 women who attend our mental health courses, 75% will report they have increased confidence and improved self esteem at the end of the programme. Improved health and wellbeing Of the 40 women who attend our mental health courses, 75% will report a reduction in symptoms of common mental health problems such as anxiety, depression and stress. 65% of women will also report feeling more able to manage their mental health and having an improved quality of life. Build social networks for women and girls Of the 40 women attending programmes, 75% will report feeling less isolated and will be able to recognise the peer support networks they have in place. For the pilot programme with Heaton Manor School we expect to work with 6 young women and will measure similar outcomes as listed above i.e. improved confidence and self esteem however thee outcomes will be more focussed on improved relationships with family and peers. We will work with the young women to devise outcomes and measurement tools.

The project will provide courses and activities to improve mental health coping strategies, particularly in relation to increasing confidence and reducing anxiety. It will provide a one to one counselling service, support groups, targeted support and therapeutic activities, such as arts and crafts and yoga. The courses include First Steps to Confidence, Coping with Depression and Managing Anxiety.
