There are more than 100,000 asylum seekers in the UK waiting for their cases to be determined. During this time they receive less than £10 per week and are not allowed to seek work. Most of the applications will eventually be approved but the process usually takes more than a year (and sometimes much longer).
After approval refugees can seek employment but most are not immediately fit for work, perhaps due to trauma, or lack of language skills. And finding work is not easy – many employers are reluctant to take on refugees, overseas qualifications may not be recognised, gaps in CVs may cause issues.
There are many high quality charities working in this sector to ensure that refugees can achieve their aim of becoming self supporting members of society.
