A leading, long-established women’s organisation, we support 3,000 women annually with holistic women-centred support, building safer, resilient, better lives. Accessing appropriate housing for Calderdale women escaping domestic abuse has always been problematic. Thus our new housing scheme, mirroring a model Hull scheme, enables vulnerable women/children to re-build their lives by timely access to suitable single-tenancy housing with earlier, holistic support. Partners include Longleigh Foundation, which funds our new Housing Development Manager post and related consultancy to 11/10/19, its parent company Stonewater (leased housing), and CFFC (social loan to purchase houses). We seek catalytic funding to extend the Manager post and fuel our housing-related legal fees and evaluation/learning budgets, to generate additional momentum in these key early stages of scheme delivery.

Our work at WomenCentre has always been designed to support women and girls from across Calderdale. Over the years, they have repeatedly told us they wished they had found us sooner - that if they accessed proper support at a key time in their lives the impact for them could been that they would have avoided the problems they were now struggling with. For many they have become now complex and entrenched (typically expressed as) if I had known about you when I was younger I might not have been in this mess, Through this project delivery the worker and volunteers will implement practical and emotional support initially, which will generally lead to one of two outcomes: a) Women will be in a better place in terms of their health and wellbeing and then begin to feel empowered to, achieve things for themselves, able to move forward and start to become more resilient . or b) The women will need ongoing support, to address underlying and entrenched issues impacting on their lives e.g. domestic abuse, childhood trauma, separation from their children. The worker and volunteers will be the coordinators of the support and the advocates for the women resulting in other agencies then being able to contribute to achieving the different outcomes the women themselves want to achieve. As our model at WomenCentre is one of co production with women and sharing our approaches more widely a third outcome will be to harness the voices of the women to give confidence to others wanting our support. WomenCentre has helped me with my motivation and encouraged me to get up in the morning and look forward to Mondays.
