CITIZENS UK CHARITY This 21-month project works with social and private tenants, with a particular focus on communities experiencing racial inequity, living in Ely, Cardiff. Accommodation is old and in need of repair, with mould and damp causing physical and mental health concerns. There are long wait times for urgent repairs, a lack of accountability from landlords when repairs were reported, and no avenue for tenants to lodge concerns. EDBERTS HOUSE This 21-month project works to amplify the voice of private sector tenants living in an inner-city area of Gateshead, Tyneside. Much of the local private housing stock in the area is in a poor state of repair, with the key issues being damp, mould and absent landlords. As a result, tenants struggle with asthma, overcrowding, stress and anxiety. This project is working to establish a permanent channel for landlords, local government, regulators, and elected representatives to hear from marginalised tenants about the housing issues they are facing, in order to achieve change and ultimately improve their health. COMMUNITY RENEWAL TRUST This 21-month project works with private and social tenants living in Govanhill, Glasgow, with a particular focus on the Roma population, to improve the quality and appropriateness of social and private housing in the area. Tenants are living in properties which are over-crowded, damp, draughty, and uninsulated, causing respiratory issues, particularly amongst children. Housing is also insecure, causing stress and anxiety. Many tenants face language and literacy barriers and discrimination, which inhibits them from exercising their rights. The project is creating an online, reporting mechanism for tenants to upload evidence of their housing issues, which are reviewed by a Housing Panel comprised of Roma and non-Roma tenants, social landlords, housing experts and the Govanhill Law Centre. The Housing Panel meets every two months to agree strategies to resolve persistent issues, such as lobbying social landlords, meeting with councillors, or reporting to the Housing Tribunal. It is also developing a housing charter, aiming to influence the Glasgow City Council Housing Committee and the Scottish Parliament Housing and Planning Committee and ultimately see improvements in housing conditions that support improved health.

LIVING RENT This 21-month project supports social tenants in the area of Knightswood, a suburban neighbourhood in North West Glasgow, to come together to understand their rights, organise to address specific housing situations they face, improve their confidence to make change happen, and grow a lasting neighbourhood housing union. Given the current economic climate and the recent large rise in the LW rate the focus this year is likely to be on supporting existing Places to consolidate relationships and retain employers. The project also aims to develop the local Action Group in Newcastle to work to engage local employers with an aim of expanding Living Wage accreditation within the city and improving pay for low paid workers. The year will see the launch of Cambridge as a Living Wage City and the team will also work on developing and piloting a new model for ‘neighbouring boroughs’ Living Wage Places in South London, with Lambeth, Lewisham and Greenwich who are all interested to become Living Wage Boroughs, alongside Southwark (which is already recognised). The new model aims to reduce duplication and achieve larger impact in targeting institutions which work across more than one borough. Research functions will continue to be embedded into the scheme, expanding data collection and evaluation in order to measure impact and ensure that learning from the first three years informs the programme. Quarterly events bringing together the Peer-to-Peer network, including to share and collect testimony, will also form part of this learning strand.
